Online permit applications are not currently available. All permit applications must be submitted in person at the appropriate department. Please contact the relevant office for current processing times and requirements.
Do I Need a Permit?
Most construction, renovation, and land use activities require one or more permits. The type of permit(s) required depends on the scope of your project.
Typically Requires a Permit
- New construction
- Additions and extensions
- Structural alterations
- Electrical, plumbing, HVAC work
- Roofing replacement
- Decks and porches
- Fences over 4 feet
- Signs
- Demolition
- Change of use
May Not Require a Permit
- Painting (interior/exterior)
- Flooring replacement
- Cabinet installation
- Minor repairs
- Fences under 4 feet
- Small sheds (under 120 sq ft)

Types of Permits
Building Permit

Required for new construction, additions, alterations, and repairs to structures. Includes review for compliance with building codes, fire codes, and accessibility requirements.
Zoning Permit

Required for land use activities including new structures, additions, changes of use, and outdoor improvements. Ensures compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.
Electrical Permit

Required for electrical installations, modifications, and repairs. Must be obtained by a licensed electrician.
Plumbing Permit

Required for plumbing installations and modifications. Must be obtained by a licensed plumber.
Mechanical/HVAC Permit

Required for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning installations and replacements.
Application Process
- Determine permit requirements
Contact the appropriate department to confirm what permits are needed for your project.
- Obtain application forms
Download forms from the Documents Library or pick up in person.
- Prepare required documents
Plans, surveys, contractor information, and other documents as required.
- Submit application in person
Applications must be submitted at the appropriate department office during business hours.
- Pay applicable fees
See Fee Schedule for current rates. Cash, check, or money order accepted.
- Wait for review and approval
Processing times vary. Contact the department for current timeframes.
- Schedule inspections as required
Once work begins, schedule required inspections with 24-48 hours notice.
Inspections
Inspections are required at various stages of construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes and approved plans.
To Schedule an Inspection:
- Call the Building Department at (555) 123-4580 between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM
- Provide your permit number, address, and type of inspection requested
- Inspections are scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
- Allow 24-48 hours notice for scheduling
The permit holder or authorized representative must be present during inspections. Work must be accessible for inspection.
