Do I Need a Permit?

Most construction, renovation, and land use activities require one or more permits. The type of permit(s) required depends on the scope of your project.

Application Process

  1. Determine permit requirements

  2. Obtain application forms

    Download forms from the Documents Library or pick up in person.

  3. Prepare required documents

    Plans, surveys, contractor information, and other documents as required.

  4. Submit application in person

    Applications must be submitted at the appropriate department office during business hours.

  5. Pay applicable fees

    See Fee Schedule for current rates. Cash, check, or money order accepted.

  6. Wait for review and approval

    Processing times vary. Contact the department for current timeframes.

  7. Schedule inspections as required

    Once work begins, schedule required inspections with 24-48 hours notice.

Inspections

Inspections are required at various stages of construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes and approved plans.

To Schedule an Inspection:

  • Call the Building Department at (555) 123-4580 between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM
  • Provide your permit number, address, and type of inspection requested
  • Inspections are scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Allow 24-48 hours notice for scheduling

The permit holder or authorized representative must be present during inspections. Work must be accessible for inspection.
